Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Speaks to Park Scholars
The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center and Park Scholarships program sponsored a talk by General Hugh Shelton entitled “The Role of the U.S. Military and Cabinet-level Agencies with Perspectives on Afghanistan, Iraq, and Haiti.” Shelton is the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and an alumnus of NC State University.
The evening provided Park Scholars and members of the NC State community with an opportunity to learn about how the American government and military have impacted nation-building in developing countries. Class of 2013 Park Scholars Andrew Miller and Stephanie Solove worked with the Shelton Leadership Center to organize the event and served as hosts for the program.
During his tenure as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Shelton worked tirelessly on behalf of service members, their families, and military retirees, and established the Joint Forces Command, which consolidates joint experimentation efforts and guides the transformation of the U.S Armed Forces for the 21st century. Currently, Shelton is the Executive Director of the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at NC State University and Director of the Hugh and Carolyn Shelton Military Neurotrauma Foundation.
