John Campbell ‘11 has been awarded the United Negro College Fund/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Fellowship.

The fellowship is sponsored by the United Negro College Fund/Merck Science Initiative which supports African-American students engaged in study and research in the biological and chemical sciences. Fellows are mentored by a Merck scientist and participate in two summer research internships at Merck research facilities.

Campbell is an outreach advisor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and serves as co-president of the Minority Association for Pre-Medical Students and the NC State University chapter of Operation Smile. He is an alumnus of the Gateways to the Laboratory Program which is offered through the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional M.D./Ph.D. Program. Gateways is a summer program which supports the next generation of physician-scientists who will become leaders in biomedical research.

After he graduates from NC State University, Campbell pursue a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree with plans to direct his own translational research laboratory in an area of systems biology and take his work from the “bench to the bedside” as a pediatric surgeon.
